O teach us to despise all vanity, to fight the battles of the Lord manfully against the flesh, the world, and the devil, to spend our time religiously and usefully, to speak gracious words, to walk always in your presence, to preserve our souls and bodies in holiness, fit for the habitation of the Holy Spirit of God.

Scripture and Prayer on Thursday, October 22, 2020

Pastor David reads Luke 10:25-37 and offers an African Prayer for Refugees:

O Brother Jesus, who as a child was carried into exile,
Remember all those who are deprived of their home or country,
Who groan under the burden of anguish and sorrow,
Enduring the burning heat of the sun,
The freezing cold of the sea,
Or the humid heat of the forest,
Searching for a place of refuge.
Cause these storms to cease, O Christ.
Move the hearts of those in power
That they may respect the men and women
Whom you have created in your own image;
That the grief of refugees may be turned into joy.

Scripture and Prayer on Wednesday, October 21, 2020

Pastor David reads Luke 10:17-24 and offers a prayer from John Cosin:

Be thou a light to my eyes, music to my ears, sweetness to my taste, and full contentment to my heart. Be thou my sunshine in the day, my food at table, my repose in the night, my clothing in nakedness, and my succour in all necessities. Lord Jesus, I give you my body, my soul, my substance, my fame, my friends, my liberty, and my life. Dispose of me and all that is mine as it may seem best to you and to the glory of your blessed name.

O Lord God, from whom we come, in whom we are enfolded, to whom we shall return:
Bring us in our pilgrimage through life;
With the power of the Father protecting,
With the love of Jesus indwelling,
And the light of the Spirit guiding,
Until we come to our ending,
In life and love eternal.

Pastor David reads Jonah 2-3 and offers an anonymous prayer:

Almighty God, more generous than any father, we stand amazed at the many gifts you shower upon us. You give freely and willingly, always with regard to our ability to receive. You give daily gifts, teaching us to trust you for tomorrow. You give us gifts through one another, so that we may learn to share. You give through our own effort, respecting our independence. How thoughtfully you offer all your gifts! So continue, Lord, of your goodness.

Scripture and Prayer on Tuesday, October 13, 2020

Pastor David reads Jonah 1 and offers a prayer from Warren Hastings:

Grant, O Lord, that we may keep a constant guard on our thoughts and passions, that they may never lead us into sin; that we may live in perfect love with all humankind, in affection to those who love us, and in forgiveness to those, if there are any, who hate us. Give us good and virtuous friends. In the name of our blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
